CD review :Evile-Skull (2013 Earache Records)
by: Jeff Blackburn
Evile returns with a vengeance on Skull. "Underworld" opens the record, and
wastes no time gettin to the gettin so to speak. Evile are no strangers to
thrashing hard, as they are one of those bands that if you like them you love
them! The right way to describe Evile is probably the aggression of Slayer,
mixed with the old epic feel of Master of Puppets era Metallica. Matt Drake
plays a controlled frenzy rhythm guitar while belting out his Tom Aryaesque
vocals. This is clear on the album second song "Skull" as he screams out Skull
Awaits Your Soul! Ol Drake shreds and plays his guitar with calculated
callousness that works the little circle pit trigger in the listeners mind. The
duo of Joel Graham on bass and Ben Carter on drums keep the back end tight.
They have the aura of old Metallica, with 2 songs over six minutes, and one over
seven.Good old fashioned thrash done right!
Overall: I give the album a 9 out of 10. The "Skull" has that Slayer War
Ensemble feel to it, and "Outsider" rips right from the beginning. As an
"Outsider" looking in I, would definitely say that if Evile were an American
band on a bigger label they would be one of biggest bands in the world. Not a
knock on Earache, as they are widely known in the heavy metal community as
putting out quality releases. Not a knock on Evile either, as they are masters
of thrash! Like all of their previous albums, another great thrash record
delivered by Evile.
