CD Review : Age of Taurus - Desperate Souls of Tortured Times (2013 Metal Blade Records)

CD Review : Age of Taurus - Desperate Souls of Tortured Times (2013 Metal Blade Records)
by: Jeff Blackburn

Desperate Souls of Tortured Times is the debut full length album from London doomsters Age of Taurus. Unlike many new doom bands, Age of Taurus has that old school feel while being fresh. There are so many great influences that I can hear on DSOTT . Candlemass, Cathedral, Saint Vitus, and the mighty Trouble. Age of Taurus cover all the bases here. There is the traditional slow, sludgy doom tracks. There are faster tempo songs that incorporate all the components that encompass the doom style. Nothing here is bucking the trend of what has been done before. What does set the Age of Taurus apart from others is emotion. As a fan of doom metal emotion is key for me. I like the doom that has the eerie feel to it. Songs that make you weep inside as you listen to it. The vocals are clean and full of emotion as TobyWright tells his story. You can feel the desperation and woe come right through your speakers. Even on the more upbeat songs, the listener can hear the desperation coming through from the masterful bass work of Richard Bruce, and drumming of Darius Clayden. The guitar work of both Wright and Alastair Riddell tie this powerful release together.

Overall : I give Desperate Souls of Tortured Times a 8 out of 10. Age of Taurus have released a doom masterpiece! As I said before, it's all in the delivery. Not a single track has that long overdraw, this is still going on feel to it. Walk with Me , My Queen really ties up the first half of the record with it's sad and desperate mood it sets. Desperate Souls of Tortured Times has a fast but crushing rhythm with the devastating low end. I have found my new go to doom record for 2013, and recommend it to any fan of good doom metal.
